The Doctoral Consortium is a workshop for Ph.D. students from all over the world who are in the early phases of their dissertation work. Ideally, students should have written or be close to completing a thesis proposal, and be far enough away from finishing the thesis that they can make good use of feedback received during the consortium.
The goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to help students with their thesis and research plans by providing feedback and general advice in a constructive and international atmosphere. A panel of prominent professors and experienced practitioners in the field of digital library research in organizations from different countries and continents will conduct the workshop. They will review all the submissions and comment on the content of the thesis abstract as well as on the presentation.
he practice of annotating documents and resources is a time-honored tradition across all scholarly domains and in the day-to-day lives of academicians and non-academicians alike. The W3C Open Annotation (OA) Community Group was formed in late 2011, joining the efforts of the Open Annotation Collaboration and the Annotation Ontology initiative. The Community Group has recently released a developer-ready, RDF-based annotation data model specification to foster the development of interoperable annotation tools and service and to facilitate the sharing of annotations across repository and Web application boundaries.

Building Social Scale Information Infrastructure: Challenges of Coherence, Interoperability and Priority (PDF)
In recent years, the challenge has shifted from building individual digital libraries, repositories and related information management systems to the design of large scale federations of such systems and related supporting services (such as preservation facilities). We are being called upon, collectively, as the research and higher education and cultural memory sectors, to make provisions for the stewardship, transmission and organization of the cultural and scholarly record, and to build, and to facilitate the work of others who want to build, knowledge creation and analysis environments that rely upon and contribute to this societal record. Further, this is happening in a dynamic environment that incorporates essential private sector systems and services (such as search engines) as well as facilities provided and governed by not-for-profit sectors.

Why Europeana? A recurring question in the history of Europeana from the reasons it was conceived to how we forge our place in the future alongside other initiatives and against the economics of Europe. Can such a large scale digital library collaboration be justified and what are its returns?
Social Machines of Science and Scholarship (PDF Abstract) (Slides on Slideshare)
Academic papers have successfully supported scholarly communication since the Royal Society’s introduction of this revolutionary open science model some 350 years ago. However, research practice is changing dramatically, particularly with the advent of digital techniques and data sources. This raises an important question: are papers still fit for purpose as we move forwards? If we can better understand that purpose it will help inform the route for “Digital Libraries at the crossroads”.
