Building Social Scale Information Infrastructure: Challenges of Coherence, Interoperability and Priority (PDF)
In recent years, the challenge has shifted from building individual digital libraries, repositories and related information management systems to the design of large scale federations of such systems and related supporting services (such as preservation facilities). We are being called upon, collectively, as the research and higher education and cultural memory sectors, to make provisions for the stewardship, transmission and organization of the cultural and scholarly record, and to build, and to facilitate the work of others who want to build, knowledge creation and analysis environments that rely upon and contribute to this societal record. Further, this is happening in a dynamic environment that incorporates essential private sector systems and services (such as search engines) as well as facilities provided and governed by not-for-profit sectors.
